Protecting young and vulnerable students, staff and visitors from exposure to asbestos fibres must be done with a great deal of care and attention. Chemistry Building

The planned refurbishment of floors 5 and 7 of an 8 storey laboratory building was about to begin, when asbestos insulation residues were identified to 16 risers to both floors. The University of Manchester required a cost effective and practical approach to the complete asbestos removal.
Abrasive blasting was the original scope for the works, however, due to the unique services running through each riser (which contained hazardous chemicals and radioactive substances) we did not believe that it was the most practical working method. We proposed a structured and complex program which offered the client a significant cost save against the original scope. This aimed to incorporate the complete removal of the masonry walls of the risers under fully controlled conditions to completely remove the asbestos-containing materials and then we undertook the rebuild of the walls.
Working within the confines of the floors whilst the remaining building was still operational and occupied, we undertook the asbestos removal works during the night to not disrupt the normal operation of the building which operated 24 hours with state-of-the-art experiments being conducted. We acted as principal contractor on site ensuring suitable welfare and management of the works.
One of the challenges of the project due to specialised equipment used within the building, we were not able to use standard asbestos removal equipment, so we worked with our suppliers to ensure the equipment that was used on site was compatible with the environment.
Hopton Primary School

We were asked to undertake an innovated asbestos removal package within the boiler room of a primary school. As with so many school boiler rooms, historic asbestos was found within the walls. In order to stop incurring asbestos costs every few years, the school asked for a different approach to the standard asbestos removal works. We were asked to install fire proofing panelling to the main walls of the boiler room. Then, we were asked to install brackets to allow for future renovation of the boiler room so that future contractors are not disturbing the asbestos debris to the walls
The asbestos removal works were organised around school holidays to minimise the disruption to the school.

We were asked by the University of Manchester to undertake licensed asbestos works within one of the university’s properties during the summer holiday shut down. Asbestos removal works consisted of decontamination under fully controlled conditions within a ceiling void of a classroom and within a service trench.
Tameside College

Unexpected extensive asbestos found throughout the main boiler house of the college after our survey required asbestos removal works and encapsulation of the walls. We were instructed following the survey to undertake the works with the minimal effect to the proposed works during the summer holidays.
We were able to allocate considerable resources to the project ensuring weekend working to complete the asbestos removal project as quick as we could for the college in anticipation of the main works.
