About Asbestos Loose-Fill Insulation
Alongside various other types of asbestos loft insulation such as vermiculite and asbestos insulating board (AIB), loose-fill asbestos was an extremely popular building material in the 20th century. Due to its effective fire-resistant qualities, asbestos loose-fill insulation grew hugely in popularity amongst the construction industry – that’s until the health risks of using this ACM came to light and was eventually banned by the UK government.
Unlike several other ACMs which were implemented within countless construction projects across the UK, loose-fill asbestos was not bound to other materials, compared to asbestos in plaster for example. Instead, the asbestos fibres are much freer in loose-fill asbestos, similar to those within asbestos sprayed coatings, and have an almost pebble-shaped and candyfloss-like appearance and texture. It can take a blue-grey or a whitish shade and is often used to fill cavities in the loft space, under floorboards and loft floors.
How Dangerous Is Asbestos Loose-Fill Insulation?
Exposure to any ACMs can cause serious health risks to anybody who may disturb the materials, but it’s important to note the absolute caution which must be exercised with loose-fill asbestos. The Health and Safety Executive confirm that it is one of, if not, the most dangerous type of asbestos-containing materials to come across, saying that ‘loose fill is made up of pure asbestos and if disturbed can release large amounts of fibres into the air, where they can be breathed in.’
Where asbestos is often encapsulated within another material or structure, loose-fill insulation’s free nature makes it even easier to inhale the pure asbestos fibres, which in turn, endangers those in the vicinity immediately and requires licensed and competent handling.
