Professional Asbestos in Artex Ceiling Removal & Other Textured Coatings

About Asbestos in Artex
Textured coatings within properties became a popular design feature in the 1960s, with the coating being used to add swirls and other patterns to ceilings. This feature is widely known as ‘Asbestos in Artex’, however Artex is a brand name which quickly became synonymous with said textured coatings. The level of asbestos within Artex and other textured coatings is usually low compared to other asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), such as insulations for example, however the risk it poses to health remains the same.

How Dangerous is Artex?
Similarly to other asbestos-containing products, the use of Asbestos in Artex within design features was banned in 1999 when the import, supply and use of ACMs was banned in the UK. This means if your property was built or last refurbished prior to this date, the textured coating within could contain asbestos.
Undisturbed ACMs pose very little risk to health. It is when these become disturbed that the risk heightens. Often, with artex ceiling removal, non-professionals tend to scrape off the texture. However, if this is not removed correctly, asbestos fibres are released into the environment. This in turn puts those in the vicinity at risk of asbestos exposure, which can cause serious health risks, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural thickening, etc.

How to Identify Asbestos in Artex
Any type of asbestos product or ACM is difficult to identify with an untrained eye. Therefore, the safest way to confirm the presence of Asbestos in Artex is via professional asbestos testing. But, there are some signs you can look out for when deciding whether to enlist professional help, such as:
- A variety of decorative, textured patterns on the ceiling or walls, e.g. swirls, stipples, spikes, etc.
- Uneven, bumpy textures.
- Commonly found in UK buildings that were constructed or renovated between the 1960s and 1990s.
