Asbestos was commonly used in bitumen due to its fire-resistant qualities and high viscosity

About Asbestos in Bitumen
Most frequent in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, asbestos in bitumen was commonly used as an internal and external adhesive for floor tiles and other types of floor coverings – in both domestic and commercial buildings. This was due to its thick and viscous properties, derived from petroleum, which could create highly strong bonds between materials. Also an immensely durable substance, asbestos in bitumen served as a fire repellent.
While asbestos reinforced composites, such as asbestos in bitumen and asbestos in caulking for example, were seen as useful materials for tradespeople – exposure to asbestos can pose serious health risks. Therefore, ACMs should only be handled by trained professionals, safely and appropriately, in accordance with ARCA, ACAD and HSE regulations.

How Dangerous is Asbestos in Bitumen?
Whilst the asbestos content in bitumen is not as high as asbestos cement pipes or asbestos insulation for example, any ACM has the potential to cause harm. The condition of your asbestos floor tiles will also worsen with time, especially upon the removal of the tiles, leaving crumbling adhesive underneath.
If your property is an older building, originating from the 1970s or before, there could still be ACMs within your floor tiles, vinyl, vinyl sheet, linoleum or laminate flooring. This is where we come in. It is crucial to have licensed asbestos contractors enlisted to inspect, remediate or remove any ACMs safely to mitigate your risk of asbestos exposure.
