The use of asbestos in high-strength building materials, such as asbestos reinforced composites, reached its peak in the early 1900s.
What Are Asbestos Reinforced Composites?
Asbestos reinforced composites is an umbrella term for items that contain high-strength building materials mixed with asbestos. These types of products were very common in both commercial and domestic properties, and can be found in a wide range of forms, including but not limited to:
- Asbestos floor tiles
- Asbestos in bitumen – used as an adhesive for floor tiles.
- Resin toilet cisterns, window sills and bath panels
- Sink/drainer pads
- Damp Proof Course (DPC) – usually installed at the base of a building’s walls during initial construction to prevent damp from rising up the walls.

How Dangerous Are Asbestos Reinforced Composites?
Depending on which product the asbestos reinforced composite has been used in, each will have a different content of asbestos. For example, floor tiles generally contain up to 25% chrysotile (white) asbestos, bitumen adhesives contain approximately 8% and reinforced plastic/resin composites usually contain 1-10%.
Chrysotile asbestos was the most commonly used type of asbestos due to its softness and flexibility. It can still be found in the roofs, walls, ceilings and floors of both commercial and domestic buildings today. While the asbestos content in chrysotile is not as high as crocidolite (blue) asbestos for example, any ACM has the potential to cause harm.
