“The duty to manage asbestos in buildings covers all non-domestic premises, like factories or shops. The duty to manage asbestos is part of the Control of Asbestos Regulations”
~ The Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

Where is Asbestos Found in Factories?
If you are the dutyholder of a factory that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, there is a chance asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) could still be present, as asbestos was widely used in machinery parts, insulation, and various construction materials before it was banned in the UK in 1999.
The HSE states some of the most common places to find asbestos in industrial properties, such as factories, includes:
- Asbestos rope seals, gaskets and paper
- Asbestos toilet cisterns
- Textured coatings on walls and ceilings, e.g. Asbestos in Artex
- Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB asbestos) around boilers, in fire doors, ceiling tiles, or partition walls
- Asbestos cement in water tanks, pipes, profiled roofs, soffits, fascias, gutters, and downpipes
- Asbestos flash guards in a fuse box
- Vinyl asbestos floor tiles backed with asbestos paper and asbestos in bitumen adhesive
- Asbestos lagging on pipes and boilers
- Asbestos sprayed coatings on ceilings, walls, beams, and columns

How Dangerous is Asbestos in Factories?
Asbestos fibres cannot be seen, smelt, or felt, whether in the air, or on your clothes, so it’s very difficult to detect the material with an untrained eye. Inhalation of asbestos fibres poses very serious health risks, ranging from mesothelioma and lung cancer, to asbestosis and pleural thickening. This is why dealing with asbestos is so dangerous.
If asbestos is left undisturbed, or ACMs are in a good condition (and have regular compliance checks carried out), the exposure level will remain very low.
However, if you are the employer or dutyholder at a factory that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, or is due to undergo scheduled maintenance, repair, or construction activities, ACMs can become disturbed or damaged. This is what leads to their fibres becoming airborne.
As a key part of the UK’s manufacturing sector, the risk of asbestos in factories must be dealt with safely, efficiently, and compliantly. This is where our licensed asbestos removal specialists can support you.
