Where Is Asbestos Found In Restaurants?
The most common places to find asbestos in commercial buildings, such as restaurants, include but are not limited to the following:
- Asbestos lagging, used as thermal insulation on pipes and boilers.
- Sprayed asbestos used for thermal insulation, fire protection, partitioning and ducts.
- Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) used for fire protection, thermal insulation, partitioning and ducts.
- Some ceiling tiles.
- Floor tiles.
- Cement roofing and guttering.
- Textured coatings, e.g. popcorn ceilings.

How Dangerous Is Asbestos In Restaurants?
Many of the aforementioned asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) also contain other types of asbestos products, including:
- Asbestos in Bitumen – used as a sealant for ceiling and floor tiles.
- Asbestos Cement – used to line asbestos guttering.
- Asbestos in Artex – used to add textured swirls and patterns to ceilings in many homes during the 1960s.
All of these products used the most common type of asbestos – chrysotile (white) asbestos. This was widely used across the roofs, walls, floors and ceilings of both domestic and commercial buildings, and can still be found in many homes and businesses today.
The only type of serpentine asbestos – chrysotile has soft, curved and flexible fibres, which can spread easily and quickly across the environment if disturbed. The inhalation of these fibres can pose serious health risks, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
