“Anyone who has responsibility for the maintenance and/or repair of non-domestic premises, including schools, is a ‘dutyholder’. For the majority of schools, the dutyholder will be the employer.”
~ The Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

Where is Asbestos Found in Schools?
According to online health and safety training provider, i2Comply, asbestos is still present in around 80% of UK schools. The HSE states some of the most common places to find asbestos in schools includes, but is not limited to:
- Asbestos lagging used as thermal insulation on pipes and boilers
- Sprayed asbestos used for thermal insulation, fire protection, partitioning and ducts
- Asbestos-Insulating Board (AIB) used for fire protection, thermal insulation, partitioning and ducts
- Some ceiling tiles
- Floor tiles
- Cement roofing and guttering
- Textured coatings, e.g. Asbestos in Artex

How Dangerous is Asbestos in Schools?
If asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) present within the fabric of the building are in a good condition, and have regular compliance checks carried out to identify potential deterioration, the exposure level will remain very low.
However, if you are the employer or dutyholder at a school that was built before the year 2000, or is due to undergo scheduled maintenance, repair, or construction activities, ACMs can become disturbed as a result of this, which can pose serious health risks – ranging from mesothelioma and asbestosis, to lung cancer and pleural disease.
According to the HSE, school caretakers are particularly at risk due to the nature of their work, e.g. drilling and fixing. Similarly, other contractors may be at risk while undertaking maintenance or installation work.
As an integral element of the UK’s education sector, it is vital that the risk of asbestos in schools is handled safely, efficiently and compliantly. This is where our licensed asbestos removal specialists can help you.
