Where Can Asbestos Be Found In Hotels?
While the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, the material can still be found in many homes and businesses today. Some of the most common places to find asbestos in hotels includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Asbestos Insulating Board (also known as AIB asbestos, used in partition walls, fireproofing panels in fire doors, lift shaft linings, etc.)
- Asbestos sprayed coatings (would most likely be used as insulation in the case of hotel buildings)
- Asbestos cement roofing
- Asbestos guttering
- Asbestos soffits
- Asbestos floor tiles, e.g. vinyl tile flooring in bathrooms, etc.
- Asbestos toilet cisterns
- Textured coatings, e.g. Asbestos in Artex (popcorn ceilings)
How Dangerous Is Asbestos In Hotels?
The majority of the above asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were produced using chrysotile (white) asbestos, with the exception of sprayed coatings which sometimes used a mixture of all three types (chrysotile, amosite/brown and crocidolite/blue asbestos).
Chrysotile asbestos was the most commonly used type due to its soft, curved and flexible fibres that were easy to spin or weave into other materials. This type is less dangerous than crocidolite and amosite asbestos, which both have extremely fine, sharp, brittle and needle-like fibres that are more hazardous to health as they can be more readily released.
However, chrysotile fibres can also spread easily and quickly across the environment if they are disturbed. The inhalation of any asbestos fibres can pose serious health risks, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
