    About Asbestos in Caulking

Where Is Asbestos Found In Hospitals?

Health and social care buildings, such as hospitals, that were built or refurbished before the year 2000 may contain asbestos. Some of the most common places to find asbestos in hospitals includes, but is not limited to, the following:

      Dangers of Asbestos in Caulking

How Dangerous Is Asbestos In Hospitals?

A 2023 Labour Research Department report, commissioned by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Scottish Trade Union Council, examined the extent of asbestos in healthcare buildings. The report found that two thirds of surveyed NHS premises in London and Scotland (open to the public) still contained asbestos.

The majority of the previously listed asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were produced using chrysotile (white) asbestos, with the exception of sprayed coatings, AIB asbestos and asbestos cement roofing, which sometimes used a mixture of all three types (chrysotile, amosite/brown and crocidolite/blue asbestos).

Chrysotile asbestos was the most widely used variety because its soft, flexible, and curved fibers were easy to spin or weave into other materials. While it is considered less hazardous than crocidolite and amosite asbestos, which have fine, sharp, brittle, and needle-like fibres, chrysotile can still pose serious health risks

When disturbed, chrysotile asbestos fibres can disperse rapidly throughout the environment. Inhalation of any asbestos fibres can lead to serious health issues, such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

As a vital part of the UK’s healthcare system, it is essential that the risk of asbestos in hospitals is dealt with accordingly. That’s where our licensed asbestos removal specialists come in.
