Asbestos guttering usually contains asbestos cement within the lining of the gutter.

About Asbestos Guttering
Prior to 1980 (shortly before the ban on asbestos in the UK in 1999), the majority of roofing products contained asbestos. The most commonly found type of asbestos within asbestos roofing was asbestos cement products. Asbestos cement was often used in gutter linings, manufactured using mechanised processes during which asbestos fibres were mixed with cement slurry. This process made asbestos guttering, which contained approximately 10-40% asbestos and was widely used for corrugated roofing, sheds, garages, drainpipes, flue pipes and other similar products such as asbestos soffits.

How Dangerous Is Asbestos Guttering?
If the gutters have never been replaced, there could be a chance that asbestos is present. When used within asbestos cement products, chrysotile (white) asbestos fibres have the ability to spread quickly across the environment. Therefore, if fibres from asbestos guttering are disturbed and become airborne, they will spread quickly, posing serious health risks to those exposed. If these fibres are inhaled, they can cause the following diseases:
- Lung cancer
- Mesothelioma (a rare cancer affecting the lining of the lungs)
- Asbestosis (a chronic lung disease)
The symptoms of these asbestos-related diseases can take years to show, as these illnesses take decades to develop in your system.
If your asbestos guttering is in poor condition or could become disturbed due to repair or refurbishment works, the next step should be asbestos removal.
