Asbestos was commonly used in pipe products as a boiler exhaust system due to its durability and fire-resistance

About Asbestos Flue Pipes
Before the 1990s, flue pipes were widely used to provide exhaust systems for boilers, which were made out of asbestos combined with either cement or asbestos paper, or asbestos guttering. They were particularly effective for exhaust gas and heat ventilation, as the pipe was essentially a sealed passage that allowed these gases to escape, without posing a fire hazard. Their appearance is characterised by their white/grey colour and rough texture. However, some could be painted over using adhesive materials, such as asbestos in bitumen, which can make old flue pipes harder to identify. Today, flue pipes are instead created using a variety of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, such as stainless steel and aluminium.

How Dangerous are Asbestos Flue Pipes?
While flue pipes are rarer to find nowadays, you may still be able to find them within some older properties. Fortunately, ACMs within boilers are much less likely to become crumbled, broken or damaged, as they are not usually subject to disturbances from external factors.
However, all asbestos products have the potential to cause serious health risks, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma. If a flue pipe has been disturbed, there is a greater chance of the asbestos fibres becoming airborne and inhalation occurring. Therefore, the next step should be asbestos removal.
