    What Are Asbestos Rope Seals?

    Asbestos rope seals were commonly used to seal and insulate various heating, plumbing and electrical systems, as well as construction materials, pre-1980. This was due to the product’s superior heat-resistance, with which it could withstand high temperatures and prevent leaks. Some common uses included:

    How Do You Identify Asbestos Rope Seals?

    It’s very difficult to identify whether something contains asbestos just by looking at it. The only way to guarantee whether your property contains asbestos or not is to have a professional asbestos survey undertaken.

    But, there are three types of asbestos rope seals with distinct characteristics that you can look out for while you’re waiting for professional support. These 3 types include:

    • Twisted Asbestos Rope Seals: Made by twisting several strands of chrysotile (white asbestos) fibres together to create a thick, robust rope. This type was frequently used to seal, insulate and/or caulk boilers and other high-temperature systems.  
    • Square Asbestos Rope Seals: Composed of long asbestos fibre yarn woven into a square form. This type was commonly used as a heat insulator or sealant.
    • Asbestos Lagging Rope Seals: Consists of two layers, one made up of rope braided with dusted asbestos, and the other made up of rope and ceramic. This was normally used for heating pipelines or for applications where constant vibrations are involved.

    How Dangerous Are Asbestos Rope Seals?

    Asbestos rope seals were typically made using chrysotile asbestos, which can be one of the most dangerous types. This is due to its soft, flexible fibres which spread quickly across the environment when airborne. Inhalation or ingestion of these fibres can pose a serious risk of developing mesothelioma, asbestosis or pleural thickening.

    Despite being a low-risk material when left undisturbed, asbestos rope seals are generally considered a friable ACM (asbestos-containing material). This means they can crumble easily by hand under pressure, greatly increasing the risk of exposure, and in turn, inhalation. 

    This highlights the importance of enlisting professional asbestos surveyors to carry out an inspection first, which will confirm the presence, type and condition of the potential ACM(s) present.
