    About Asbestos Removal Manchester

    What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is an umbrella term for several naturally occurring minerals that have crystallised to form fibres. These fibres are resistant to heat and fire, as well as chemical and biological degradation, and are also mechanically strong.

Asbestos can be split into two main groups – serpentine and amphibole. There is only one type of serpentine asbestos (chrysotile or white asbestos), and the rest fall under the amphibole category, e.g. crocidolite (blue) asbestos, amosite (brown) asbestos, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite.

Serpentine asbestos fibres are soft, curved and flexible. Whereas, amphibole fibres are characterised by their rod/needle-like appearance, and thin, sharp fibres that are more hazardous to health.

    Danger of Anthrax Exposure

    How Dangerous is Asbestos?

Asbestos is only dangerous if you come into contact with the fibres directly, this could be via breathing, eating or drinking the substance, or by skin contact.

If you are exposed to asbestos, this can pose serious health risks. These health risks can include mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural thickening.

When is an Asbestos Survey Required?

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there is a legal requirement for all ACMs to be removed (as far as reasonably practicable) before major refurbishment or demolition. This is where a Refurbishment & Demolition Asbestos Survey (or R&D asbestos survey) is needed.

On the other hand, an Asbestos Management Survey (AMS) may be required if you, as a dutyholder, have been asked to produce an asbestos register and asbestos management plan for your premises. The purpose of an asbestos management survey is to locate all ACMs that could be disturbed during the normal occupancy of the building.
