From the 1920s, until it was banned in the UK in 1999, asbestos was widely used due to its useful qualities such as flexibility, high tensile strength, thermal/electrical insulation, etc. This made it very popular within the construction industry, meaning it was used for many products in the home including asbestos roofs, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, and many more. As a result, asbestos remains present in millions of UK properties to this day. If disturbed, asbestos fibres can become airborne which can pose serious health risks to those exposed, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural thickening. These works are needed for any building that pre-dates the year 2000 and is due to undergo maintenance or refurbishment. If remediation or removal works are not carried out, this could lead to prosecution from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), fines of up to £20,000 per offence and your insurance policies declared void.
