Here at Reddish Vale, our licensed asbestos contractors offer safe and compliant asbestos removal and asbestos remediation services across Great Britain. But, what is asbestos removal vs remediation? And how do you know when you need them?

What Does Asbestos Removal Involve?

Asbestos removal involves a structured plan to remove any ACMs that are deemed to pose a serious health risk if they were to be disturbed and inhaled.

The process begins with the implementation of control measures where asbestos removal is due to take place. These control measures include seals and enclosures, which will ensure that no asbestos fibres contaminate surrounding areas. The level of control measures put in place will vary depending on the type of asbestos that has been identified, and the condition or deterioration of the ACMs.

Once our licensed asbestos removal team have safely and compliantly removed all ACMs from the premises, the materials will then be sent to a specialist asbestos waste disposal site.

Subsequently, our team will begin the in-depth cleaning process which removes all remaining debris leftover from the removal. Cleaning will involve vacuuming, surface cleaning, visual inspections and air monitoring.

When Do I Need Asbestos Removal?

After potential ACMs have been identified by a survey, depending on the type, condition/deterioration and extent to which the materials are present, asbestos removal may be needed. Once the presence of asbestos has been confirmed by a laboratory, and removal is considered necessary, the process can begin.

Alternatively, if your premises are due to undergo refurbishment, demolition or significant maintenance works, asbestos removal may be needed to ensure the ACMs are not disturbed and released into the air.

Can I Remove Asbestos Myself?

No, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that you should never attempt to remove asbestos yourself. Not unless you are trained, competent and experienced in asbestos removal.

Licensed asbestos removal specialists, such as the team at Reddish Vale, are vital for ensuring that asbestos removal at your premises is safe and compliant.

What Does Asbestos Remediation Involve?

While asbestos removal is the full removal of ACMs on-site, asbestos remediation is a process that provides a remedy for asbestos which could, but doesn’t always, include removal. Remediation could involve a range of asbestos abatement methods that help remedy the issue of asbestos exposure.

This could include any work carried out to preserve the current structures in the premises, ensuring that any ACMs within the fabric of the building are not disturbed. More specifically, this can include, but is not limited to:

  • The repair of damaged sections of ACMs
  • The removal of small areas of ACM
  • The removal of boarding or pipe insulation
  • The encapsulation of ACMs using ET150 paint or alternate materials to seal the exposed edges of the asbestos

When Do I Need Asbestos Remediation?

If there are small areas of ACM present, asbestos remediation may be needed. Similarly to removal, if there are refurbishment, significant maintenance or demolition works planned for the premises, remediation may be required in order to avoid ACM disturbance.
