    About Asbestos in Felt

Between the early 1900s and 1990s, asbestos was widely used in felt within the construction industry, in order to act as asbestos insulation – adding heat and protection to both domestic and commercial buildings. Due to its insulating properties, it was also commonly used as an underlayment for asbestos floor tiles and roofs.

Despite the heat-resistance, insulation and durability of asbestos when used in felt proving to be a useful asset to construction projects at the time, their asbestos content can pose very serious health risks if not handled safely by asbestos removal specialists, in accordance with ARCA, ACAD and HSE regulations.

How Dangerous is Asbestos in Felt?

Historically, the ACM content in felt used for asbestos floors and roofs was 85%. Additionally, the type of asbestos used for the vast majority of these products was chrysotile white asbestos, one of the most common and dangerous types of asbestos used in the past – due to its softness and flexibility.

Asbestos felt flooring is one of the few types of asbestos products that have been completely banned in the United States and it has been banned in the UK since 1999. In fact, it remains in millions of floor and roof underlayments to this day. If disturbed, asbestos in felt can easily release toxic fibres into the air. Similar to asbestos pipe lagging, asbestos cement sheets and more, asbestos in felt should only be handled by a fully trained professional.
