When is Licensed Asbestos Removal Training Required?
Regulation 10 in the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012) legally requires every employer to ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to their employees who work with asbestos. This is the case whether the work is licensable or non-licensable.
If the asbestos removal contractor you enlist to remove licensable ACMs, as well as the operatives who work at the company, do not have a license issued by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive), it is illegal for them to carry out the works.
According to the HSE, examples of licensable ACMs include:
- Asbestos sprayed coatings (i.e. limpet asbestos)
- Asbestos pipe lagging
- Asbestos loose fill insulation
- Asbestos millboard
- Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB asbestos)
The HSE states that examples of non-licensable ACMs include, but are not limited to:
- Asbestos cement products, e.g. roof sheeting and pipes
- Small areas of textured decorative coatings, e.g. Asbestos in Artex
- Thermoplastic or vinyl floor tiles and coverings
- Loosely fixed (i.e. screwed) Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB)
Can I Remove Asbestos Myself?
If you are not trained, competent or experienced in asbestos removal – you should never attempt to remove ACMs yourself. It is illegal to attempt to remove licensable ACMs if you are not part of a company who holds a license issued by the HSE.
