Manufacturers incorporated asbestos in vinyl within wallpaper, floor tiles, sheet flooring and linoleum backing between the 1920s and 1980s.

What Is Asbestos In Vinyl?
The manufacturing of asbestos in vinyl began as early as the 1920s, when the product was used in vinyl wallpaper, vinyl floor tiles, vinyl sheet flooring and asbestos linoleum backing.
The vinyl products themselves did not contain asbestos, but some manufacturers incorporated a felt-like backing within the products, which did contain asbestos material(s). This was because asbestos, when combined with vinyl, provided extra cushioning for vinyl sheet flooring and linoleum backing. The adhesives used to make these products were also likely to have contained asbestos, e.g. asbestos in bitumen.
Most commonly found in domestic properties that were built before the mid-1980s, asbestos in vinyl was usually applied in sheet-form, used for products like asbestos-backed vinyl sheet flooring. This type of flooring was generally characterised by a colourful marble or stone chip pattern on the surface.

Who Was Exposed To Asbestos In Vinyl?
Those who manufactured asbestos in vinyl products and those who lived in homes containing them, as well as the wide range of tradespeople involved in the construction and maintenance of both domestic and commercial properties, were at risk of exposing themselves to these products’ fibres. Those most at risk included, but were not limited to, the following groups:
- Manufacturers
- Installers
- Homeowners
- Builders
- Plumbers
- Tilers

How Dangerous Is Asbestos In Vinyl?
Due to the asbestos within these types of products being sealed from the atmosphere by the overlaying vinyl, the risk of asbestos exposure present in this case can be minimal. Additionally, if the asbestos within vinyl sheet flooring, wallpaper or floor tiles is in good condition – the risk of asbestos exposure will remain low.
However, if these types of ACMs have become damaged, crumbled or broken over time, or they are disturbed during any refurbishment, demolition or significant maintenance works being carried out at your property – the risk of these asbestos fibres becoming airborne will notably increase.
This is where our comprehensive asbestos removal services come in. After identifying any type of ACMs present within your premises, depending on the condition and threat of these materials, asbestos removal may be the next step in the process of dealing with this asbestos.
