What Is Asbestos In Vinyl?
The manufacturing of asbestos in vinyl began as early as the 1920s, when the product was used in vinyl wallpaper, vinyl floor tiles, vinyl sheet flooring and asbestos linoleum backing.
The vinyl products themselves did not contain asbestos, but some manufacturers incorporated a felt-like backing within the products, which did contain asbestos material(s). This was because asbestos, when combined with vinyl, provided extra cushioning for vinyl sheet flooring and linoleum backing. The adhesives used to make these products were also likely to have contained asbestos, e.g. asbestos in bitumen.
Most commonly found in domestic properties that were built before the mid-1980s, asbestos in vinyl was usually applied in sheet-form, used for products like asbestos-backed vinyl sheet flooring. This type of flooring was generally characterised by a colourful marble or stone chip pattern on the surface.
