    What is Asbestos Paper?

    Asbestos is naturally fibrous, which means it can be moulded, woven or spun easily to make different products. One such product, popular throughout much of the 20th century, is asbestos paper. As the name suggests, this is paper with at least 80% of chrysotile (white) asbestos added to it.

    How Do You Identify Asbestos Paper?

    There are some signs of asbestos paper to watch out for, but if you’re ever unsure, we would always recommend having a professional asbestos survey carried out. Unless you are trained yourself, this is the only way to ascertain whether a material contains asbestos or not.

    In the meantime, look out for: 

    • Rough/Fibrous Texture: Asbestos paper isn’t smooth like the paper we’re used to writing on, instead it has a rough and fibrous texture.
    • Normally White in Colour: Although, hints of brown or grey are also possible.
    • Varying Thicknesses: Thin, flat sheets were commonly used for insulation purposes, but layered and corrugated types also exist.

    If you spot any of these signs, stay away from the area, don’t do anything to disturb the asbestos and do NOT attempt to remove it yourself.

    How Dangerous is Asbestos Paper?

    Despite most variants of asbestos paper being thin and low in density, the asbestos content (which, most of the time, is 100%) makes it very dangerous, if disturbed. It is also highly friable, meaning it can be easily crumbled or torn under hand pressure, posing a significant risk of potential fibre release.

    If these fibres are inhaled, they can lead to the development of serious diseases, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural thickening. Hence, if you are not trained in asbestos removal, you should never attempt to remove asbestos yourself.
